Waste pollution in waterways is a growing environmental problem in Indonesia, while belt conveyors commonly used to lift floating waste have limitations such as being prone to slip, wear, and damage under wet and muddy conditions. This study aims to develop a waterway waste-lifting conveyor through modification of the transmission system from a belt-pulley to a roller chain-sprocket system, accompanied by maintenance, repair, and performance testing activities. The research used a design method with a quantitative approach, in which the rotational speed of the drive motor (RPM) was tested at four inverter frequency variations (400, 700, 1000, and 1420 Hz), each measured four times using a digital tachometer on both the motor shaft and the gearbox output shaft. The results show that the chain system modification increased the chain linear speed from 0.8 m/s to 0.18 m/s and eliminated the slip that commonly occurred in the belt system under wet conditions. The performance test results showed that motor RPM increased proportionally with inverter frequency, from 234.5-278.2 RPM at 400 Hz to 1283-1370 RPM at 1420 Hz, while the gearbox output RPM followed the same pattern with much lower values according to the gearbox reduction ratio. The implementation of a risk-based preventive maintenance program successfully reduced the frequency of unscheduled breakdowns from three times to once per month and reduced average downtime from 5 hours to 2 hours. These findings indicate that integrating chain transmission modification with a scheduled maintenance program can improve the reliability, efficiency, and service life of waterway waste-lifting conveyors.
